Fluency

Developing Automaticity

There are many components of reading. The main five are Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. For the purposes of this blog post, we will be focusing on Fluency.

STEP 7  Fluency

Developing fluency is important for students to be able to read words quickly and accurately, so they can focus on what they are reading.

A Focus on Fluency ”   (<- Click to download) is a TPRI (Texas Primary Reading Inventory) Newsletter that reviews scientifically research based best practices for teaching Fluency. It was written by The Children’s Learning Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

It is important for students to feel successful while they are reading, so include plenty of repeated practice.

I designed this CVC Fluency with Comprehension   with beginning readers in mind. Each one reviews a short vowel sound and three sight words that will be in the passage. It also includes three simple questions to get student’s used to answering questions from the text.

I like to have students pick a color for question number one and find the answer in the text. Then continue with a different color for each question.

Watching music videos with the lyrics on the screen or television with the closed captions turned on is a great way to sneak in some reading practice.
