Sentences

for Beginning Readers

There are many steps to building successful beginning readers.

✅ Learn letters and the sounds they make.

✅ Read CVC Words

✅ Read Sight Words

Now we will practice reading Sentences.

Reading Sentences

Students will practice reading simple sentences with CVC words and Sight Words.

Write simple sentences with CVC Words and Sight words on sentence strips.

Use worksheets with simple sentences. I love to use Read and Match pages with sentences and pictures.

I also love to give students CVC words and Sight Words, have them listen to a sentence and build it. Here’s a quick and easy activity you can try. See the video example below. You may jump to 2:15 to see the section on Building Sentences unscramble.

Beginning readers need lots of practice and repetition. They need to feel successful! So don’t be afraid of reviewing things that may seem easy for them, because that’s how they build confidence.

Here’s an easy unscramble activity. Write a sentence with no capital letters or punctuation on a sentence strip or half page folded like a hotdog. Cut the words apart. Say the sentence. Have students put the words in the right order. Then have them write the sentence. This is a great opportunity to teach about using an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence and punctuation at the end.

I love to see how students feel excited and confident when they can read a whole sentence! 😍
